Samuel Lucas is a community dedicated to excellence where we work together to provide opportunities for successful learning and personal development in an environment where anything is possible.
At Samuel Lucas we are fully embracing the three aims of the new curriculum: Fluency, reasoning and problem solving. We firmly believe that reasoning should be at the heart of all maths lessons to enable pupils to become mathematicians that are fluent in basic skills and who are able to problem solve competently. A culture of learning from mistakes and all being on a learning journey from low entry to high ceiling encourages a collaborative learning environment. Through questions such as ‘Are you sure?’ pupils have to really reflect and reason about their predictions and answers. We have used the new curriculum to engage in research and to change approaches to maths teaching that allow pupils to have a deeper and wider understanding of maths through a more practical and broader approach to teaching and learning.
At Samuel Lucas we recognise the importance of the spoken word and how the acquisition of vocabulary is a fundamental stepping stone to being a competent reader and writer. We provide a wealth of reading opportunities through quality texts and learning activities to enable pupils to be engaged in and be inspired to write. Using daily routines through to inspiring Book Weeks quality texts model high expectations. From Reception to Year 6 speaking and listening skills are fundamental to all areas of learning and through strong purposeful cross curricular links children are able to express themselves fluently. The learning environments are print rich and the learning journey of writing is celebrated.
In Art we aim to promote creativity through an engaging, inspiring and challenging curriculum. Children will be encouraged to use their skills and knowledge to experiment, invent and create their own pieces of art and design. They will develop an understanding of how art and design has shaped history through exploring the work of great artists and designers. Children will learn to develop their own ideas using a range of drawing, painting and sculpture techniques and be encouraged to evaluate and analyse their own creations.
Samuel Lucas is a school where music is integral to the experiences of the children. Through whole class music lessons, choir, orchestra and individual instrumental tuition, all delivered by expert teachers, children receive a musical education where practical, composition and performance skills are explicitly taught and celebrated. Through our Harvest Festivals, Christmas Productions, School plays, participating in local and national musical performances our children experience and contribute to musical excellence.
At Samuel Lucas we aim to encourage our children’s natural curiosity in order to explore the world around them. We provide opportunities to investigate a wide range of scientific areas through research and practical methods. The new curriculum focuses on the scientific skills that the children develop over their time at school and promotes the linking of science to other areas of the curriculum. The children are prompted to use their prior scientific knowledge and skills to predict answers to issues which they have raised both as class and individually through questions such as ‘Why did…?’, ‘How come…?’, ‘What if?’ and ‘When would..?
Other subjects covered in the curriculum at Samuel Lucas are Physical Education (PE), Design and Technology, Geography and History, Computing, French, Religious Education, and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship (PSHC) and Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC).
