Autism Awareness Week began on 14th March and every class has taken part in age-appropriate activities to improve understanding of this condition which affects approximately 1 in every 100 people. Pupil voice showed that children had a better insight into autism and comments included:
‘It’s changed the way I look at someone with autism. I also know not to judge and to try and be helpful’ (Y6 boy).
‘I think we should all think more about what we could do to help someone with autism’ (Y5 girl).
Members of both teaching and support staff also attended afternoon and evening sessions at a local conference on autism where there was an opportunity to meet other practitioners, hear excellent speakers, look at resources and reflect on our own practice.
