Welcome to Our Summer Term!
Our theme this term is called ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ and is based on the adventures and travels of the fictional character, Phileas Fogg.
We will be following our curriculum around the world by exploring the various parts of the world that Fogg visited during his travels. We will be travelling to Japan to design and make traditional ‘Kimonos’ using our sewing skills. We will be exploring how Andy Warhol used famous images and colour to create pieces of renowned artwork in his New York studio. In History we will be learning about the achievements of historical figures from India, including the charity work of Mother Teresa and the peaceful protests organised by Mahatma Gandhi. In ICT we will be helping Phileas Fogg discover the identity of an important character in the book by using databases and email. Alongside all this we will also be looking at the traditions and culture of China, and how transport has changed over time.
During our Literacy lessons we will be using our reading and writing skills to write our own animal myths based on traditional Native American and African myths. We will also be writing a non-chronological report based on the countries visited by Phileas Fogg.
In Numeracy we will continue to develop our knowledge of multiplication and division through investigations and word problems. We will learn how to use standard units when measuring capacity and how to read a scale on measuring equipment to the nearest interval. We will also develop our understanding of fractions, relating them to shapes, objects and numbers.
I am greatly looking forward to exploring this new topic as a class and learning all the new topics and facts that are included within this theme. I am sure that as we join Phileas Fogg in travelling around the world, your children will take you along on the journey as well!
