As writers, the children have recently be learning about the features of an explanation text.
The children started their learning journey having enjoyed reading the brilliant story Until I met Dudley by Roger McGough. In this story, a girl uses her incredible imagination to explain how everyday things work, for example she thought a fridge was visited every night by special polar bears! The books uses striking illustrations as well as well written text that took the children into the furthest realms of fantasy. Dudley the dog then provides the correct explanation of how familiar machines work.
The children then enjoyed reading extracts from the book ‘Charlie Small: Gorilla City’ by Charlie Small. In the story, Charlie Small has some incredible adventures and one includes him riding a steam powered rhino. The children used this to help inspire their later work to create their own inventions.
It has been great seeing the children work towards to intended outcome of creating their own inventions that are designed to help them with their everyday lives, and writing an explanation to go with it. They have done such a brilliant job applying what they have learnt to produce some fantastic explanation texts, here is a small selection for you to enjoy. Well done Year 4!
