The children were visited by fire fighters from Hitchin Fire Station today as part of our topic on the Great Fire of London. We all had a fantastic time learning about how the fire started, what caused it to spread and how they put it out. The children each made a replica of a house from Pudding Lane where the Great Fire started, and we nervously waited for the fire to spread. Thankfully, the brave fire fighters were on hand to make sure it was put out safely (phew).
We also found out what fire fighting is like today compared to 1666. The children were fascinated to discover all the different ladders, hoses and taps on the fire engine – why not ask them about the Baby, Mummy and Daddy ones?
The message we were left with was to be careful and stay away from fires. As part of this, we were all encouraged to take part in “Test It Tuesdays” – a day once a week when we can test our smoke alarms at home. The fire service offers free checks at home, for more information please follow the link –
