What a fantastic History day we have had learning about the Great Fire of London! A very big thank you once again to the parent helpers who allowed our day to be so successful!
In the morning we were transported to 1666 were we visited different shops and trained at them. (We had to watch out for those pesky rats though!) While this was going on we heard about the fire spreading and trained how to use buckets to try and put out the fire!
At the barber surgeon we used tools to help people suffering with conditions like toothache!
At the apothecary we learnt how to grind herbs to help visitors seeking cures for their ailments.
At the leather workers we designed and made our own bookmarks using a hammer and nails.
At the chandlers we created our own candles by dipping a wick in beeswax.
At the schoolhouse we made our own ink and wrote with quill pens.
At the perfumers we created our own scent bags (to help ward off the plague).
At the bakers we ground corn into flour and made our own plaited bread loaves.
At the seamstresses we sewed our initials onto cloth.
At the weavers we were able to weave our own cloths!
As metal workers we created our own moulds using clay, some of which were then used to actually cast some metal buttons!
In the afternoon we then became archaeologists and used a brush to uncover artefacts from shops/houses destroyed by the fire. Once we had uncovered the artefacts we then had to decide whose shop had been destroyed (e.g. if we uncovered sewing needles the house could belong to a seamstress).
