Remembrance
This week began with our whole school Remembrance Assembly. The whole school gathered outside with the wreaths that each class had made and carried out our act of remembrance with the Last Post played on the bugle by a governor, a 2 minute silence at the 11 o’clock and readings by Year 6. We were then lucky enough to have a visit from Mark from AJMHealthcare on Friday so that we could see the wheelchair spoke guards that the Year 5 children had decorated. He told us about the parade at the Cenotaph in London and some of us were lucky enough to try the wheelchair for ourselves. A big thank you to Mark for offering us this project and an even bigger thank you to Mr Ellis for developing our design and co-ordinating the painting.
RE
Maple enjoyed their trip to St. Mary’s Church this week, ahead of Walnut’s trip on Monday next week. It was a fantastic opportunity to see the objects and furniture that we have been learning about in class in situ and to understand the scale of the different artefacts. There were lots of animals to spot! Hopefully this visit will also make the Carol Service at the beginning of December more meaningful as the children will understand a little more about how the Church is special and its history.
Phase
We also had a visit from Phase, a local charity that offers workshops to support emotional growth and wellbeing in children and young people. This was the first of our termly visits which will help to prepare the children for the challenges and changes they may face as they begin to grow up and prepare for the next stage of their education. The topic of this visit is getting to know your emotions, and how they are normal and helpful. Phase also taught us some different techniques for dealing with sadness, anger and worry. These sessions are always practical and interactive and supported by volunteers from the local sixth forms. The children were engaged throughout and hopefully found something useful in them.
In English we completed our poetry writing and illustrating unit and in Maths we continued our fractions work. These will definitely feature in next week’s blog, as the children have been working hard on their core subjects as well as their foundation topics and have produced some beautiful words and images in English.
