To gain an understanding of how Native Americans felt on the Long Walk and the trail of tears, Miss Mai and Mrs Butterworth created a mock relocation for year 5. Year 5 received an eviction notice where all year 5 were being evicted from Samuel Lucas School! We had to head out of the classroom without our coats and belonging and experienced life on the cold field.
When out on field, we hid then huddled together to discuss empathy and what feelings the Native Americans would have felt when being forced from the home and separated from their family and tribe.
When we were able to return to our classroom, we wrote a diary entry in the perspective as a Native American and what he or she would have felt on the Trail of Tears! It was such a fun and powerful lesson!
