It was Walnut’s turn this week to venture out into town and down to St Mary’s church. We were lucky with the weather again and enjoyed a dry walk to the church where we were able to see the features and furniture of our local Christian place of worship. This included the font, the rood screen and the altar, and the beautiful Victorian stained glass. We also found some brasses for rubbing on the floor near the altar and some of us had a go at taking rubbings in our books. This trip has really helped to bring our RE learning to life and helped us to understand better how the Christian community sees God and how they experience closeness to God in their community spaces.
In Maths we continued our work with multiplying and dividing. In Maple, we revisited factor bugs to consolidate our understanding of factors and products, as well as deepening our understanding of prime and square numbers.
In PE we are continuing our handball unit making sure we are always moving to keep warm outdoors and working on the skills of accurate passing and bounce passing. We are also practising calling a range of fouls. This is important as one of the key overarching learning outcomes we are working towards across upper KS2 is being able to organise and referee games as independently as possible, while showing good sportsmanship in all situations.
In school, it was also Referendum Week. In Year 5 in PHSE, we learnt about the Houses of Parliament, what the House of Commons and the House of Lords are and who our local MP is. Mrs Shroder also organised a referendum for Parliament Week for us. We all had the opportunity to vote on the focus activity we would most like to have for Feeling Good Week later in the year – Carnival and circus skills or getting creative with a professional artist. This has helped us to learn more about how our core British value of democracy works in our country and to learn the key message that we should use our vote to make sure our opinion is taken into account – no vote, no voice!
I have not got photos of the children’s English work yet – look out for class books coming home this week so you can see the real thing!
Looking forward to seeing everyone refreshed on Monday after a hopefully enjoyable long weekend!
