PE, School Sport and Physical Activity Update – February

Although we are only a few weeks into February, the children have been very busy in the world of PESSPA in school.

EYFS – The children have made great progress in developing their core movements with lots of opportunities to skip, hop, jump, balance, run and climb. We are also continuing our work by experimenting with our ball skills – we have been throwing, catching, aiming for targets and have also started using our feet to manoeuvre and kick a ball.

Year 1 – On finishing our gymnastics unit of wide, narrow and curled learning we have moved onto our second gymnastics unit where we are focusing using different types of body parts to travel, balance and use the apparatus.

Year 2 – We have finished our linking unit in gymnastics by putting sequences together that included linked movements and balances on the apparatus. We have now started our second gymnastics unit which is concentrating on travelling in different pathways.

Year 3 – As well as our ongoing swimming lessons, we have been working on Symmetry and Asymmetry in gymnastics this half term. We have finalised our sequences this week and look forward to performing them after the half term break!

Year 4 – On finishing our unit of work on communication and tactics we have started focusing on a Gymnastics unit that concentrates on Bridges. We have considered what a bridge could look like in gymnastics and then how we apply that to the apparatus and into a sequence.

Year 5 – Following our gymnastics unit we have started a Dance unit of work that is themed on the Greeks. We have investigated the different Greek Gods and put movement to their character, as well as looking at Greek soldiers and choreographing our own battle sequences.

Year 6 – We have completed our Dance unit which was themed on the story of the Titanic. The children put on some brilliant performances to finish the last lesson. We have now moved on to an Outdoor Adventure Activities unit with a focus on Orienteering. We have been developing our map reading skills and understanding of a map before moving onto using a map of the school for point and return activities.

School Sport

Football Fixtures

Monday 7th February – we took two teams to Ickleford school for a Girls Wix Cup Quarter Final match and a Year 6 team fixture. Both teams represented the school fantastically and I am very proud of all of the players who participated.

After taking a 2-0 lead the girls team unfortunately fell to a 6-2 defeat. We wish Ickleford the best of luck in the next round. Special mentions to Izzy (two goals) and Eva (superb defensive performance) for their performances.

The Year 6 team were victorious against their Ickleford counterparts, coming away with a 3-1 victory. Our goals were scored by George, Rocco and Lucas. A special mention goes to Benjamin for a very solid goalkeeping performance.

Hertfordshire Schools Cross Country Event

A huge well done to our Year 5 and 6 cross country runners. They have shown amazing commitment levels – practicing before school every Friday in varying weather conditions!

All of the runners represented the school brilliantly and were very happy with their efforts. The results can be found on the HSAA website – http://hsaa.info/crosscountry

A special thank you must go to Mrs. Thomas and Mrs.Thrussell who have helped train and prepare the children for the event.

Well done to all of our children this half term, keep up the commitment, enthusiasm and hard work!

Enjoy the half term break
