PESSPA update

Physical Education

EYFS – We have been continuing our work on our ball skills with an emphasis on throwing and catching. Our fundamental movements continue to underpin our learning and we have also started looking at object control in the form of mini noodles and balloons!

Year 1 – After completing our gymnastics unit which finished with exploring linking movements to make a mini sequence – we have now started work on a Games for Understanding unit. We have been exploring what it means to be an attacker and a defender. We have then looked at how we transfer these skills into team games.

Year 2 – After completing our gymnastics unit which finished with some excellent sequence performances – we have now started work on a Games for Understanding unit. We have been looking at how we can work as a team to score as many points as we can and also how we can prevent other teams from scoring points. We have discussed our tactics/strategies for this and reflected on how successful we were afterwards.

Year 3 – Our gymnastics unit finished with paired sequence performances before moving onto our current unit of Dance. Our learning is themed around the weather – so far we have explored moving and responding to the sound of the drum and music whilst creating a storm sequence and a volcanic eruption sequence. The children are also approaching the end of their block of swimming lessons.

Year 4 – We have finished our Dance unit which was themed around Space. Our lessons finished with a paired performance where we performed our interpretation of an Alien and an Astronaut encountering each other. We have started a unit of Orienteering which will take us through to the Easter break.

Year 5 – On completing our Dance unit we have been working through our Orienteering unit in the past couple of weeks. We are developing our map reading skills, considering the importance of a key and how we locate points on a map/route planning, as well as working out which direction we are travelling in.

Year 6 – After finishing our Orienteering unit, we have been working through our Gymnastics unit of Matching and Mirroring. We have looked at how we apply our skills onto the apparatus and are now working towards creating a sequence for end of unit performances.

School Sport

Year 4 Dodgeball Festival – A team of Year 4 children travelled to Knights Templar School in Baldock for a Dodgeball festival with other local schools in the North Herts area. We had a lot of fun throwing, catching and dodging! Well done to all of the children who represented the school so well.

Year 5 Netball Festival – A team of Year 5 girls participated in a Netball festival at St.Francis college on Monday 14th March. We played 10 minute matches against other local schools before the final presentation. Well done to Lauren (most improved) and Rosie (player of the tournament) for their awards and to all of the girls who have made such brilliant progress this year!

Football – Wix Cup Semi Final – A team of footballers made the short trip to William Ransom school for their Wix Cup Semi Final match. It had been raining all afternoon and in tricky conditions, both teams played their part in a cracking game of football. After hitting the post early on and both teams having half chances the score at half time was 0-0. The second half began much like the first before we conceded from a well worked goal. The team was quick to respond with Zac scoring with a well placed effort past the home keeper to make it 1-1. In a nervy finish, with extra time and penalties looming, a flick on from Dan saw Zac race through and calmly finish to make the score 2-1 and send us into the final! Player of the match went to Zac for his match winning goals. A special mention to James who defended brilliantly all match in tough conditions.

Sportshall Athletics – Some of our Year 5 and 6 athletes participated in the NHSSP Sportshall Athletics competition at Highfield School in Letchworth. The heats were very competitive and the children competed brilliantly. We took lots of 1st and 2nd place finishes in our heats which meant both boys and girls teams finished 5th overall.

Netball Rally – A team of Year 6 Netballers participated in the end of season Netball Rally at Whitehill school on Saturday 19th March. We lost our first two matches against Whitehill and Ickleford. Both games were 0-0 at half time but some clinical shooting from our opponents saw us fall to 2-0 and 3-0 defeats respectively. The children showed great resilience and determination in the next match against Our Lady school. After falling a goal behind, a brilliant attacking display from Libby and Nafeesa helped lead us to a 3-1 victory. We were ahead in our final two matches against William Ransom and St.Andrews but were pegged back in the second half in both games finishing 1-1 and 2-2. Overall this meant we finished in 5th place. The children have made excellent progress with their Netball skills this year and should be very proud of their efforts.

Well done to all of our children this term –  whether it be PE, School Sport or Enrichment you continue to show a great effort and enthusiasm towards your learning. Hopefully the weather will be kind to us as we move into the summer term!
