Reception 2021 – Summer 2 Week 5

Hello from Lilac and Willow, what a great week we’ve had in Reception.

This week

This week Reception have read the book Mad About Mini Beasts by Giles Andreae.  This book introduces a new animal that you might find in the garden from slithery snails and buzzing bees, to wriggly worms and munching caterpillars!  The children really enjoyed the rhymes and colourful pictures in the book.  We also read non-fiction information texts to help us discover more about various minibeasts.  As part of the continuous provision, the children enjoyed classifying and sorting minibeasts using the following criteria: whether they have legs or not.  They also used their observational skills to draw and paint detailed pictures of minibeasts.  They were being very creative by using play dough to make their own colourful minibeasts and enjoyed creating What Am I? Minibeasts writing, which we hope you were able to try and guess a selection of them at Open Evening.

In Phonics this week, we revisited tricky words from throughout the year.  The children also looked at decodable words using all the letters and sounds we have used this year.  We practised applying our phonics to write cvccc for example bench and cccvc words for example strap.

In Maths we have been learning how to describe routes and journeys using directional and positional language. The children did this by looking at some animals who were making an obstacle course and then had to describe the route the animals took.  The children used the words over, under, through and around to describe how the animals went around different objects.

In Jigsaw we revisited the story of the Cautious Caterpillar and now the children have had the opportunity to visit Year 1 they talked about the things they are looking forward to in Year 1.  We read the Worrysaurus by Rachel Bright.  The story is about Worrysaurus who planned a special picnic on a beautiful sunny day.  It isn’t long before the rain comes down and Worrysaurus gets a small butterfly of worry starting to flutter in his tummy.  He thought about what his Mummy said to him about “Chasing that butterfly away” and to think of things that make you happy.  We talked about who the children can talk to if they are worried about something.

Thank you to every who attended Open Evening, it was great to see so many people visit.  We very much enjoyed sharing all the children’s learning and hard work with you.

Next week

  • We will be reading the traditional tale Jack and the Beanstalk.
  • In phonics, we will be using the monster phonics version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears to consolidate our learning from throughout the year.
  • In Maths, we will be revisiting previous learning to work at solving problems.

Supporting your child at home

  • Distribute items evenly, for example: “Put 3 in each bag,” or give the same number of pieces of fruit to each child. Make deliberate mistakes to provoke discussion.  This will support your child to be able to compare numbers.
  • Draw out common themes from stories, such as bravery, difficult choices and kindness, and talk about children’s experiences with these themes.  By doing this, your child will learn to compare and contrast characters from stories, including figures from the past.
  • Observe and interact with natural processes, such as ice melting, a sound causing a vibration, light travelling through transparent material, an object casting a shadow, a magnet attracting an object and a boat floating on water.  This will encourage your children to explore the natural world around them.
