Hello from Lilac and Willow, what a great week we’ve had!
This week:
We have spent this week reading the traditional tale ‘Three Little Pigs’. The children have really enjoyed listening to the story and have been working very hard to develop their own story telling skills throughout Child Initiated Learning (CIL). The children made puppets of the characters from the story in the creative area. They used role-play masks which allowed the children the chance to pretend that they were the characters from the story; or “hot-seat” as it is also referred to. We also used story maps as a way of mark making to retell the story. By the end of the week, the children were chomping at the bit to join in with the repeated refrains throughout the story.
Wolf: Little Pig, little pig, let me come in!
Pig: Not by the hair on our chiny chin chin!
Wolf: Then I’ll huff and I’ll puff and I’ll blow your house down!
In Maths this week, we have been learning about patterns. The children have been discovering that patterns are repeated designs or sequences, and that patterns can be made of anything and can be found anywhere. The children have been working very hard to make their own patterns in lots of different ways, and also to finish a given pattern.
In Phonics this week, the children were practising their listening and attention skills by exploring the different speech sounds. We spent time thinking about the features of the sounds we heard and made – was it a long sound, a loud sound, did it change from high to low?
Next week:
- We will be developing our designing and making skills whilst creating houses and homes.
- In Maths, we will be learning about 2D shapes.
- In Phonics, we will be developing our oral blending and segmenting of sounds in words.
Supporting your child at home:
- Encourage your child to create their own repeating pattern. Can they make a pattern using colours/shapes/numbers/actions?
- Re read the story of the Three Little Pigs and encourage the children to join in with repeated refrains. Perhaps you could read other stories or traditional tales and see if your child can spot any more repeated refrains to join in with as your read the story.
- When reading with your child, why not try asking the following questions:
– (Whilst looking at the front cover) What do you think the story is about?
– (Whilst looking at the illustrations) How do you think that character feels, and why?
– (Pausing halfway through the story) What do you think will happen next?
– (At the end of the story) Which was your favourite part, and why? - Explore different mouth movements with children – blowing, sucking, tongue stretching and wiggling. Practising these movements regularly to music can be fun and helps children with their articulation.
