Hello from Lilac and Willow, what a marvellous week we’ve had in Reception!
This week:
As part of our learning, the children learnt about arctic animals. We looked at different animals and how they have adapted to live in their environment such as the colour of their fur. We also read ‘Sam’s Snowflake’ by Gillian Shields. Why not ask your children about some of the arctic animals they learnt about and why an animal hibernates?
In maths, we were learning about combining two groups to make a total. Throughout the week, the children have been using multilink and objects, such as leaves, to help them find how to combine groups. Why not ask your child if they can show you how to combine groups using real life objects at home?
In Phonics this week, we learnt the sounds x, y, z and zz. AS well as revisiting and reviewing all of the sounds we’ve learnt so far this year, we’ve continued working hard with our blending and segmenting. As part of this during CIL, the children have been sounding out and writing their own selection of real and alien words. Alien words are made up words that use real sounds, for example ‘ziff’. The idea behind alien words is that they reinforce the skills of blending and segmenting words. Why not draw an alien for your child and get them to name it?
In PE, Mr Smith continued looking at take off, flight and landing as pat of gymnastics. This time, Mr Smith introduced a new element by encouraging the children to undertake a tuck jump as part of flight. Why not ask the children to show you their tuck jump? Can they come up with any other types of jump?
We have also been continuing preparations for our Christmas celebrations. The children have been busy making star and snowflake decorations. They have also really impressed us during nativity rehearsals this week, we know they cannot wait to share this with you next week.
Next week:
- In Phonics, we will be learning the sound ‘qu’. We will also revise the tricky words ‘I’, ‘no’, ‘go’, ‘into’, ‘the’ and ‘to’. We will also be practising letter formation and revisiting all of the sounds we’ve learnt so far this year.
