Reception – Autumn Week 9

Welcome back from Lilac and Willow, we hope you had a lovely half term.  It has been another busy and fun filled week in Reception.

This week:

We have started learning about our first festivals, Bonfire Night and Diwali.  The children learnt about the history of Bonfire Night and why we celebrate with fireworks and a bonfire.  They created some fantastic firework pictures using various materials including chalk and glitter.  Why not ask the children to draw a range of fireworks as a way of helping support their pencil control?

Next, we found out about the Hindu festival of Diwali.  We learnt that Diwali is known as the festival of lights and that as part of the celebrations, Hindu families will decorate their houses with lanterns and diva lamps.  Why not ask the children to explain why lamps are put into a path outside their homes?  Hindus also wear special clothes, give gifts, eat special food, draw Rangoli patterns on the floor and create Mendhi patterns on their hands.  The children created their own fantastic Mehndi patterns and Rangoli patterns using a range of materials.  Why not ask them to try and create their own Rangoli or Mendhi patterns for you?

In maths we’ve been learning about measuring time.  The children started by using our school timetable to help us sequence events throughout the day.  We used time words including now, next and later to help us sequence events in order.  Why not ask your children to use key events at home to help them tell time e.g. when do we eat breakfast, when do we brush our teeth?

In phonics, we continued to revisit and review sounds that we have previously learnt.  We then used these sounds to read and write simple CVC words e.g. p-a-t, m-o-p.  We also introduced new sounds including h, b and r.

Next week:

  • In phonics, we will be learning the following sounds: f, ff, l and ll.
  • In maths, we will be learning about 2D and 3D shapes.
  • As part of our learning about festivals, we will be having our own Reception Festival of Stories.

Any other information:
