Reception – Spring 2 Week 3

Hello everyone, we have had a great week in Lilac and Willow classes.

This week

This week we used the book ‘Usborne Beginners: The Solar System’ as part of our learning about the solar system and to learn how to gather information from non-fiction books.  We used the book to learn about the ‘Contents’ page which is usually a list found at the start of the book that tells us what is included in the book and tells us the page number that they are found on.  The children learnt that they can read information books in any order and that they contain facts.  We learnt that the ‘Glossary’ is usually found at the end of the book and is an alphabetical list of words, relating to the subject, which has explanations.

Also as part of our topic of Space the classes explored that some colours are hot and some colours are cold on the colour wheel.   We looked at which planets were warm colours and which planets were cold colours on the colour wheel for example Mars is a red warm colour and Neptune is blue which is a cold colour on the colour wheel.

In Maths the children have been learning about repeating patterns and 3D shapes.  The children learnt to recognise patterns by saying them, explaining what the pattern was and finally extending the patterns.  We then showed the children some patterns where they had to try spot the mistakes.  We also talked about what makes a shape 3D and we looked at examples of 3D shapes in real life objects.  The children also thought about the names of common 3D shapes and began to describe their properties.

In phonics this week, the children were learning the trigraph ‘igh.’  A trigraphs is where 3 letters come together to make 1 sound.  As well as practising segmenting and blending words that included the igh trigraphs, we enjoyed reading the Monster Phonics story Rapunzel where ‘Yellow I’ rescues Rapunzel.  The children have continued working hard to apply their phonic knowledge in their reading and their writing.

In Jigsaw the children have been learning about foods that are healthy and unhealthy and about making healthy eating choices. We thought about what a healthy diet would look like and the different food groups and how much we should be having of each different food group.

Next week

  • We will be asking: What is the Earth made of? How can we live on planet Earth? How can we look after planet Earth?
  • We will learning about St. Patrick the patron saint of Ireland.
  • We will be thinking about the Hindu festival of Holi.
  • In Maths, we will be revisiting and reviewing previous learning this term to help consolidate our learning.
  • In Phonics, we will be learning the trigraph ‘air’
  • In Talk 4 Writing, we will continue to adapt our story map of ‘On the way home’ by Jill Murphy.
  • In Jigsaw, we are learning about why sleep is good for us and how to help get to sleep.
  • We will be looking at oral hygiene and answer the question: Why do we have teeth?
  • This week will start our visits to the local book shop Next Page Books.

Supporting your child at home

  • When sharing a story with your child talk about character’s feelings, actions and motives, make asides and comment about what is happening in the story for example, “That looks dangerous – I’m sure they’re scared that they’re all going to fall off that broom!”.  By doing this, you will help your child to listen to and talk about stories to build familiarity and understanding.
  • To develop problem-solving skills with your child, talk through how they, you and others resolved a problem or difficulty.  Show them that mistakes are an important part of learning and going back is trial and error not failure.  By doing this, you will help your child to show resilience and perseverance in the face of challenge.
  • Support your child to orally rehearse a complete sentence before writing.  This will help your child to write short sentences with known sound-letter correspondences using a capital letter at the start, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end.
