A Reception Class Post

Reception Summer 1, Week 1.

Welcome back!

We are very much looking forward to a marvellous summer term ahead. Many of the children in reception this year have shown a keen interest in Space, so over the next 4 weeks we have designed our teaching and learning this term to support these interests.

This week

We have been learning about astronauts. We have looked at what they do as a job, how they eat, drink, sleep and go to the toilet in space, as well as famous astronauts and what they have achieved. We looked at the famous astronauts; Yuri Gagarin, Valentina Tereshkova, Mae Jemison, Neil Armstrong and Tim Peake. The children have all started writing an information book, which we will add to each week based on the focus of our learning.

In Phonics, we have had a recap week; practising some of the harder phonemes and putting them into words and sentences. The ones we have focused on this week have been; ear, air, igh and ure. We have also been practising all of the tricky words that we have learnt this year.

In Maths, we have begun to learn about numbers 10-20, looking at how they are made up of ‘ten and some more.’

During our Enrichment activities on Thursday, the children will take it in turns this term to be involved in food prep, woodwork, computing and sewing. In food prep, they will make a cucumber and yogurt dip and peel and cut the vegetables that they can dip into it to eat. In woodwork, they will decorate and improve their models from last term. In computing, they will be learning how to log onto Purple Mash and use the mouse on the key board to navigate a directional game. In sewing, the children will be making their puppets that they designed last term.

We have been enjoying the ever-changing weather outside this week! Please remember; we go out in all weathers so do ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.

Other information

  • If you have any picture books at home about Space and your child would like to bring them in to share then please do send them in, just make sure that they’re named.
  • Please could you ensure that everything that comes into school has a name label. This includes both shoes, as the children do tend to take them off when putting costumes on or welly boots on.

We hope you have a restful weekend.
