Reception Summer 1, week 6

Hello everyone, we hope you are enjoying this wonderful sunny weather we are having at last!

This Week

The children have been busy in reception this week, discovering fossils and learning about how they are formed. We read Stone Girl Bone Girl by Laurence Anholt which is a fictional story based on Mary Anning of Lyme Regis. In the story, we read about her real life discovery of the Ichthyosaurus which she found in the cliffs of Lyme Regis at the age of 12! Her discovery played an important part in the science of evolution. She later uncovered a Plesiosaurs, Pterosaurs, several other Ichthyosaurus and hundreds of fossils which can still be seen in museums around the world today. We also looked at the work of Elizabeth Phillpotts, also a revolutionary figure of her time. We’ve done lots of investigating, observing, fact finding and creating. The children have made their own fossils using salt dough and imprinting dinosaur footprints and shells. We have found many interesting things in our digging area and the children have made some fantastic paintings and drawings from what they have observed from our fossil collection.

In Phonics we continued applying our phonics knowledge by practising blending to read and write CCVCC words.

In Maths, the children have been learning about number bonds to ten.

In our PSHE lesson we have been looking at the revised school rules and why we have rules in school and in life.

After the June half term

We will begin our growing topic, with our key text being Jack and the Beanstalk. We will also be planting some beans.

We hope you all have a lovely half term and look forward to seeing you all in Summer 2!
