Hello from Lilac and Willow, what an active week we’ve had!
This week
This week the children have been excited to start our Space topic. We learnt about Tim Peake and about what astronauts do and how they travel into space. We watched a clip of the moon landing which the children found really exciting. Over the course of the week the children created paper plate astronauts as well as making an alien planet using junk modelling. We also created rockets using construction bricks and we did lots of writing about space – well done everyone!
In Phonics this week, we used the story of the Big Turnip to help with our learning and particularly our segmenting and blending. As we read the story the children were practising and applying their phonics to help them read the story with us.
In Maths this week we were using stories that contained ‘first, then and now’ to learn about adding amounts, for example, first there were 5 people on a bus, then 3 people hopped on, now there are 8 people.
This week was PE week and Lilac and Willow have thoroughly enjoyed this. They had had the opportunity to participate in new activities. We tried using trampolines and were able to try different types of jumps and we also had a chance to play playing tennis. Mr Smith did a Multi Sports session for the children to participate in during CIL and we had our weekly bike, scooter and body boarding sessions. Unfortunately, rain put pay to our last activity on Friday, but we are hopeful that it will be rearranged in the next few weeks, if we get a sunny spell. A big thank you to Mr Smith for organising PE week and well done to all the children for trying the new activities – great job everyone!
Next week
- We will be continuing our Space topic and will be creating entries for our space learning log.
- In Phonics, we will continue to practise our phonics and look at introducing the children to compound words.
- In Maths, we will be using the concept of first, then and now to learn about taking away.
Supporting your child at home
- Build upon your child’s incidental talk: “Your tower is definitely the tallest I’ve seen all week. Do you think you’ll make it any higher?” This will support your child to articulate their ideas and thoughts in well-formed sentences.
- Read aloud books to your child that will extend their knowledge of the world and illustrate a current topic. This will help your child to engage with non-fiction books.
- Provide opportunities for children to tell each other about their work and play. Help them reflect and self evaluate their own work. This will support your child to show resilience and perseverance in the face of a challenge.
