Reception – Summer 2 Week 6

Hello from Lilac and Willow, what a lovely week we have had enjoying the summer sun!

This Week

For our final full week in Reception, we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate with the children by looking back and asking them to all about their favourite learning from their first year at school.

Lilac Class enjoyed revisiting the following learning:

  • Superheroes as part of our fundraising for Red Nose Day in March
  • France and Mexico as part of our learning about life in other countries in April
  • Dinosaurs as part of our learning about gathering non-fiction information from books in May

Willow Class enjoyed revisiting the following learning:

  • Rabbits as one of our Play Project themes from June
  • Superheroes as part of our fundraising for Red Nose Day in March
  • Dinosaurs as part of our learning about gathering non-fiction information from books in May

The children were brilliant to recall what they had learnt previously to help them consolidate their learning this week.

The children also enjoyed their first Sports Day (or on this occasion Sports Days).  On Day 1 the children took part in a fun and exciting carousel of activities which gave them a chance to apply the skills learnt during this year’s PE lessons with Mr. Smith.  The events the children took part in were Javelin Throw, Obstacle Course, Ball Throw, Ball Roll & Ball Bounce.  On Day 2 the children took part in a series of sprint races.  Over both days, the children competed in their houses and all of the adults agreed that the children did such a great job making sure to try their very best; and most importantly, to enjoy themselves.

We ended our week of celebrations by having a picnic.  Once the children finished helping to prepare the sandwiches and the cupcakes, we set off outside to eat our delicious treats in the shade before playing some games, having a story and singing some songs.

Next Week

  • The children will be enjoying a film, crisps and drink on Tuesday courtesy of the SLPA
  • School finishes Tuesday 20th July at 2pm.

Supporting your children ready for Year 1

  • Encourage your child to continue reading during the holidays. This could include:
    • Reading picture books together
    • Reading print in the environment such as road signs, posters, shop signs
    • Visit Oxford Owl to view a free collection of phonetically linked book banded eBooks – oxfordowl.co.uk
  • Complete the Summer Writing Challenge each week
  • Use practical opportunities to practise understanding of numbers and the number system e.g. ‘First Mummy has 10 biscuits. Then she eats 6.  Now, how many will she have?’

And finally…

From all of the staff in Early Years, we would like to say how very proud we are of your children.  We think you will agree that they have worked so hard both in school and at home with their learning this year.  Thank you for your continued support this year, we have very much enjoyed getting to know them and to be a part of the learning journey.  We hope you all a very happy and restful Summer and wish you and your children all the very best for Year 1.
