What an amazing Sports Day we enjoyed on Tuesday!
Inspired by the Year 6 performers and their taster session in Sports Week, some of the Year 5s are already looking forward to joining in the performance next year. The carousel of events was smooth. The relays went without a hitch – not a single baton dropped. A fantastic morning of sport and sportsmanship – well done to everyone.
We spent plenty of other time outside enjoying outdoor learning this week. In Science we looked at different examples of plants that reproduce asexually without producing fruits and seeds, including potatoes, spider plans and heucheras. Being outside gave us an invaluable opportunity to look for further examples of nature’s lifecycles, and the children have come up with some great questions for further exploration: does moss have flowers? are mushrooms plants? can plants reproduce infinitely? why do orchids and daisies have flowers but not fruit?
In RE, we enjoyed some shade in the Year 1 learning area as we tried out experiencing silent reflection as the Quakers practise as part of their worship and enjoying being close to Nature, as some religions like to be. We definitely felt some of the benefits, such as the pleasure being outside especially on a warm day, the opportunity to take time and look around at the natural world and taking a moment to focus in on the sounds of the world around us. We all appreciated the world a little more after this experience.
We also enjoyed some rounders this morning, as we have a shift in gear in PE from the rigors of relay practice, and with our second week working on our cams, the whole cams mechanism – and the difference between cams, eccentric cams and cam followers – was starting to make sense.
