A Year 5 Class Post

Sports Week

Year 5 have had a fantastic Sports Week this year, enjoying wheelchair basketball, street dance and cheerleading, before finishing the week with our second trip in as many weeks over to Knights Templar School for the annual Olympics legacy event. This event saw us competing as France against 17 other local primary schools in a range of Olympic and Paralympic Sports.  A highlight was the piece of writing from the Samuel Lucas sports reporters being chosen as the piece read at the closing ceremony. The children were polite and worked hard throughout the day – and will probably sleep well tonight after all the fresh air and exercise!

The children have bravely tried new sports and activities, competed against people they know and people they don’t know from other schools and also been respectful and mature sportspeople throughout the week .

What the children thought about cheerleading:

‘I enjoyed the dancing and it was even better with pompoms – but I did get very tired!’

‘I thought cheerleading was a wonderful experience because it was fun learning a new sport.’

‘I was a bit worried about the cheerleading but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Nearly as good as maypole dancing!’

‘I didn’t like the music that much but the pompoms were really fun.’

‘Cheerleading was an interesting experience. Not quite for me but it was fun trying something new.’

‘I enjoyed cheerleading because the dancing and colourful pompoms released dopamine in my brain which made me feel good.’

What the children thought about wheelchair basketball:

I liked the wheelchair basketball because it made you work with people you wouldn’t normally work with. I would like to do it again – it was easier than I expected.’

‘Wheelchair basketball was super-fun because you could spin, speed and slide.’

‘I liked it because it was a fun new experience.’

‘I loved wheelchair basketball because we tried a common sport in a new way, we got to meet a Paralympian and we learnt how to use a wheelchair.’

‘I love the wheelchair basketball and it was interesting experiencing what a disabled person’s life was like.’

‘I loved it and want to do it again.’
