The children have all come back well rested from the Christmas break and have made such a fantastic start with their learning this half term!
As writers we have read the explanation text ‘Monsters: An owner’s guide’ and then started writing our very own Monster Guide explanation texts about a monster of our choice!
As mathematicians we have started learning about money. We started by recognising coins and notes and their values. We have then explored finding totals of amounts by counting the pounds and then the pence and also how to select coins to make a certain amount.
As Geographers we have started our new topic ‘Oceans and continents’ and started by exploring globes, atlases and maps and what the differences are between them. We then learnt that the world is divided into different parts and created our own globes to label these.
As scientists we have started our new topic on ‘everyday materials’. We explored a range of everyday materials and thought about what scientific vocabulary we could use to describe each material.
“A sponge is soft and absorbent” – Ralph
“Metal is stiff and opaque” – Thomas
“Wood is hard and bumpy” – Heidi
“Glass is transparent” – Eliise
As religious learners, we have started learning about special places. We have discussed what places are special to us personally and why, and then started to look at special religious places such as mosques and churches. We will continue to explore this further next week.
We have had a brilliant start to the year with our first enrichment sessions this week. Hawthorn have been doing 60 second challenges such as burpees, figure of eight with a football, and mountain climbers! Oak class have been playing fun team games such as stuck in the mud.
The children are really enjoying their gymnastics lessons this term – we are learning how to create a sequence that flows that includes a roll, jump and a balance. The children have enjoyed exploring different rolls such as forwards, backwards, and teddy bear rolls.
