Hello from Reception, we hope you are all having a superb week!
This week
We’ve had a busy week in reception this week learning about King Charles III, ahead of his coronation tomorrow. The children have been learning about the Royal family and reading information books to find out facts about King Charles III. We have learned that the Commonwealth is a global family of countries around the world who work together to help each other achieve their goals. As well as being Britain’s king, His majesty’s other job is leading the Commonwealth. We looked at the countries on a map and linked back to what we have previously learnt about this year.
We ended the week with a wonderful whole school picnic to celebrate the coronation. In music, the children have been learning the National Anthem of ‘God save the King.’ The children and staff looked great in their red, white and blue clothes on Friday and we had a fun-filled day with arts and crafts and a coronation themed P.E session with Mr Smith, racing on pretend horses and a team game of passing the crown!
In Phonics, the children continued to apply their phonics knowledge by practising blending to read and write CCVC words. CCVC words are made up of consonants (C) and vowels (v) for example skip, stop and drop. We used the monster phonics story to practice this where the Tricky Witch hears about Miss Oh No’s dance class and wanted to have some fun of her own by casting a spell on the other monsters.
In maths this week we have been learning about doubling. We used mirrors to help us with this concept.
Next week
- We are going to introduce our dinosaur topic by learning about what animals come from eggs
- In Jigsaw, we will think about the impact of unkind words.
- In Phonics, we will continue applying our phonics knowledge by practising blending to read and write CVCC words and previously learned diagraphs.
- In Maths, we will be learning about sharing and grouping amounts.
Supporting your child at home
- To help your child explore the composition of numbers to 10, emphasise the parts within the whole number. For example: “There are 6 eggs in the egg box. 2 have spots and 4 have no spots.”
- Play hiding games with a number of objects in a box, under a cloth, in a tent etc. For example: “ 5 toys are in the box and I will take 3 out. I wonder how many are still there?” By doing this, you will help your child to automatically recall numbers for numbers 0-5 and some to 10.
- Support your child to orally rehearse a complete sentence before writing. This will help your child to write short sentences with known sound-letter correspondences using a capital letter at the start, finger spaces between words and a full stop at the end.
- Reading with your child at home will significantly help them to develop their understanding of letters and sounds, as well become better readers and writers. The Monster Phonics books are designed to support the children with their learning and it is important that the children read these regularly however, additional books outside of Monster Phonics books will also help. Please write comments in your child’s reading record to let us know how your child has got on with their book.
- Model how you read and re-read your own writing to check it makes sense. This will encourage your child to re-read what they have written to check that it makes sense.
