A Year 5 Class Post

Welcome Back!

It’s been lovely seeing all the Year 5 children again after the Easter break.

A new term means lots of lovely new topics – it’s going to be a great half term!

In English we have started our exploration of Macbeth. This ties in beautifully with our Tudor history study that will run until half term. We shared plot summaries and freeze frames to find out more about his plays and to get ourselvesĀ thinking about why we still enjoy Shakespeare today – his great themes have something to do with it: power, ambition, magic, temptation and friendship.

We can all name the 6 main Tudor monarchs (and the 7th one, who reigned for only 9 days!) Ask your child if they can remember them all. We were surprised to find that Edward VII was the same age as us when he became king!

In RE, we learnt about Passover which is the Jewish festival remembering the Exodus of the Jews from Egypt and commemorated on 22 April. We enjoyed the story of Moses’ live and the journey of the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and finding out about the symbolism of the foods on the Jewish seder plate. We will be learning more about Jewish traditions and celebrations over the coming weeks.

In Art we began our journey into becoming Year 5 sculptors. We thought about the differences between sculpture and painting and drawing, looked at the sculptural work or Jansen, Bourgeois and Gormley and then had a go at some making ourselves.
