A Year 1 Class Post

Year 1 Autumn 1 Week 3

Hello everyone,

It has been a great week with lots happening in Year 1.

As writers, we were continuing to develop our sentence writing by demarcating our sentences using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.  We also learnt how to use the word ‘and’ to help us join words and smaller sentences together.

As mathematicians, we have been learning about the magnitude (size) of numbers by comparing 2 different amounts using the vocabulary less than, more than and equal to.  We have also been using symbols to help us represent our comparisons as well as words.

As scientists, we continued to explore materials and their properties.  We were very excited to be able to share a special toy from home to help with our learning.  We talked about the different materials and shared reasons why we thought each toy was made from that chosen material.

As geographers, we spent time finding out some interesting information about Scotland.  We learnt that the national flower is called a thistle, that capital city is called Edinburgh and that there is a traditional Scottish outfit worn called tartan which is a patterned fabric with lots of different designs.

Thank you to those families who were able to attend our Welcome to Year 1 Information Evening.  If you weren’t able to attend, please contact us and we will give you a copy of the Welcome to Year 1 booklet.

We hope you have an enjoyable weekend,

Mrs. Houlihan and Mr. French
