A Year 1 Class Post

Year 1 Autumn Week 3

We have had a great week!

In English, we have read the book What Pirates Really Do by Melanie Joyce. We explored the verbs in the story and came up with our own. We acted out actions to our partners and they guessed what verbs we were showing. We ended the week by applying our knowledge of verbs by writing captions for our own drawings of pirates, telling the reader what they really do.

This week in maths we have been comparing groups of objects using words like greater than, less than and equal to. We are beginning to understand and use the inequalities symbols < and > to compare groups of objects and number cards.

In History, we thought about the skills that historians need to use to explore the past. We used skills like sequencing, reasoning and asking questions to learn about the life of Queen Victoria.

In RE, we explored the Jewish harvest festival of Sukkot. Mr McAdam built us a sukkah – the structure that Jewish people use to help them celebrate Sukkot. Each class helped to build the sukkah by adding the roof and decorations. We then read a story called Sammy the Spider’s First Sukkot while we sat in our decorated sukkah!

We continued our Friday afternoon enrichment of den building and scooting!

Next week:

  • In English we will be creating a pirate fact file.
  • In Maths, we will be continuing to secure place Value within 10.
  • In Science, we will be looking at the properties of different materials.
  • In Geography, we will be learning about Scotland.
