Welcome to your new classrooms Hawthorn and Oak.
Our theme this term is called Australian Adventure. As part of our work around this theme, we will be developing skills as geographers, scientists, writers, artists and mathematicians. We will take inspiration from Australian culture, history and everyday life to as part of our learning.
In English, we have developed our poetry skills to create and perform a range of different poems. The children are exploring the traditional tale of Rapunzel through reading, writing and drama. In the second half of the term, we will use the Australian traditional of Tiddalick the frog to create their own version of a traditional tale. The children will use their geographical enquiry to help create a non-chronological report about the human and physical features of Australia.
In Maths, the children have begun the year by consolidating their learning around the number system and place value. Children apply this knowledge to help them solve addition and subtractions problems including finding missing numbers. Children are developing strategies that demonstrate their understanding as part of reasoning and explaining how they reached the answer.
In Science, we are investigating ‘Living things and their habitats’ and in the second half of the term, we will be learning about ‘Animals including humans’.
In Computing, we will be learning the skills to be programmers by programming a sprite using Scratch software.
In PE, the children are learning Australian Rules Football and Aboriginal Dancing.
In RE, we will be looking at the significance of Signs and Symbols in the world around us and in religious groups. In the second half term, we will focus on the Christian festival of Christmas.
We are very much looking forward to the exciting term ahead!
