Year 2 – Autumn Term 2018 – Overview

Welcome to your new classrooms Hawthorn and Oak.

Our theme this term is called Australian Adventure. As part of our work around this theme, we will locate Australia on a map and identify its territories. We will explore its landmarks, animals, weather, history and culture.

In English, we will develop our poetry skills to create a range of different poems. The children will be exploring the traditional tale of Rapunzel through reading, writing and drama. Along with this we will be using what we’ve found out about Australian animals to create a report about our favourite one. In the second half of the term, we will use the Australian traditional tale of Tiddalick the frog to create their own version of a traditional tale. The children will use their geographical enquiry to help create a non-chronological report about the human and physical features of Australia.

In Maths, the children will begin the year by consolidating their learning around the number system and place value. They will be consolidating and extending their knowledge of addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, finding fractions of numbers and shapes as well as investigating money.

In Science, we are investigating ‘Animals including humans’ by describing the basic needs of animals, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle. In the second half of the term, we will be learning about ‘Living things and their habitats’ by investigating, exploring and comparing a variety of habitats and simple food chains.

In Computing, we will be learning the skills to be programmers by programming a sprite using Scratch software. In PE, the children are learning the skills of dance by taking inspiration from the aboriginals of Australia.

In RE, we will be looking at the significance of Signs and Symbols in the world around us particularly in religious groups. In the second half of the term, we will focus on the Christian festival of Christmas and the importance of gifts.

We are very much looking forward to the exciting term ahead!
