What a busy and exciting summer term Year 2 have had so far! We are so proud of all the hard work, enthusiasm and determination the children have shown as they continue preparing for Year 3.
As Writers…
Year 2 have been working incredibly hard on developing their writing skills this term. We created our own imaginative creation stories inspired by the Australian creation story Tiddalick. The children loved inventing their own characters and explaining how different parts of the world were created.
We have also explored poetry through wonderful texts including Dread Cat, If You Could See My Laughter and Magic Box. The children experimented with descriptive language, rhythm and imaginative ideas to create their own fantastic poems.
As Mathematicians…
In maths, we have been learning all about measurement. We practised measuring and comparing using different units including litres, millilitres, kilograms, grams, centimetres and metres.
Over the last few weeks, we have continued building our understanding of fractions by making halves, thirds and quarters, as well as practising counting in fractions.
We have also started learning to tell the time, focusing on o’clock and half past. We will continue developing these important skills after half term.
As Geographers…
In geography, we have been exploring maps of our local area and identifying both human and physical features. The children have enjoyed learning how maps help us understand the world around us.
Next term, we are very excited to take part in fieldwork in Hitchin town centre, where we will create our own maps of Hitchin town square.
As Historians…
This term in history, we learnt about medicine through the ages and compared life during the plague with the COVID-19 pandemic. The children asked thoughtful questions and made excellent comparisons between the two periods in history.
More recently, we have begun learning about the Victorian era. Year 2 were especially surprised to discover that school was not compulsory until Victorian times! Many found it hard to imagine going to work instead of school at their age if they had lived during that period.
As Artists…
In art, we have taken inspiration from different artists to create our own beautiful landscape paintings using watercolours. The children worked carefully to experiment with colour mixing and painting techniques, producing some wonderful final pieces.
We are incredibly proud of everything Year 2 have achieved this term and are looking forward to even more exciting learning for our last term in Year 2, have a safe and well deserved half term break!
