Our topic over the last two weeks has focused on Places (as part of our people and places theme this half-term). A big thank you to all the parent volunteers that have come to share their experiences and knowledge with Willow and Lilac classes – it is so appreciated. The children have learnt all about Ireland from Kiera and Caoimhe’s dad – children had so much fun Irish dancing, listening to the bodhran (Irish drum) and exploring the hurling/camogie stick and sliotars (ball used to play the game). We also had a wonderful visit from Pippa’s mum who shared lots of information about Galicia in Spain – children loved hearing about the tooth fairy mouse, Ratoncito Perez, and the different carnivals and celebrations. We also had a thought-provoking visit from Ottie’s mum, an animal welfare officer, who shared her knowledge and experiences of working with donkeys and horses. Children learned how to care for these lovely animals in a holistic way.
We are continuing to enjoy our core texts – The Three Billy Goats Gruff, Ava Twist Scientist, Rosie Revere Engineer, Hospital Dog and Polar Polar Bear – What can you hear. In our talk for writing sessions, children have explored The Three Billy Goats Gruff further through storytelling resources, making storymaps and some Role on the Wall where we considered the emotions of the Troll.
In Maths we are continuing to explore quantity and number – this week, we represented 6,7 and 8 in different ways. We are also continuing to practice our subitising skills to help secure fluency in counting and learning about part/whole models to understand relationships between numbers.
You can help by:
- reading daily with your child – this has a very positive impact on children’s progress in reading and comprehension. A little goes a long way!
- encouraging your child to ask questions using question words and whole sentences.
- encourage your child to notice numbers in the environment and doing lots of counting.
